What is Reiki?

What is Reiki?

If you are in the holistic world at all, even casually, chances are you've heard of Reiki healing. This article guides you through some of the more crucial elements of this practice and what to expect if you are interested in trying it. This article focuses on Usui Reiki, which is the traditional practice. For information on other styles, check out this article!

I want to be very clear here. Everyone's spiritual journey is their own. This is simply a starting point for anyone with a curiosity to know more.

Reiki is a Japanese word that roughly translates to "universal energy." Many cultures worldwide value spiritual energy as a part of their overall health, and it is not just present in Japanese culture. Here in the US, we often have a very different understanding of spirituality, so it's completely understandable if this information takes a moment to make sense. It is not a religion in itself and is compatible with other spiritual practices.

Reiki is an open practice. For more information about its history, this link to an article from Wild Within Acres includes more about appropriation and closed vs open practices. It is a beautiful way to honor the people who have come before us and have given us the opportunity to experience the healing of Reiki.

Have you heard the term mind, body, spirit? At the center of Reiki, we find the practice of treating these elements as equals. Just as we take care of a broken bone or a cold, we find balance in caring for our spirit as well. Meditation is a discipline that benefits everyone and is often used to aid in this balance. Reiki, like meditation, is a companion to many other practices, such as sound, vibration, and crystal healing.

Reiki is a journey

There is something rather intimate about the relationship between the person performing Reiki and the individual receiving it. Repeated sessions are most effective whether there is an intention for deep shadow work or simply a desire to maintain your spirit as you do your mind and body. Like nutrition and exercise, the spirit is in need of care. It is thirsty for the peace that comes when all the restlessness has settled down.

There is a ton of additional information about this practice. This article is meant as an introduction. Please feel free to reach out with any questions you may have if you are interested in connecting on this topic.

As a final word, please know that this isn't official medical advice or a replacement for your doctor. I am not a medical professional. Everyone's experience and benefits from Reiki are a part of their unique journey within their spirit.
